A bank account or US-issued card can save the 1% tax.
Since January 1, 2026, a 1% federal tax applies to covered remittances funded with cash, a money order, a cashier’s check or a similar physical instrument. Funding from a qualifying US bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card is exempt. Other fees may still apply.
How to get more to your family
- Compare what your family receives, not only the fee. A low fee can come with a weaker exchange rate.
- Use one total budget for every company. MamaGetsMore compares them that way for you.
- Pay from a US bank account or US card when you can. Paying cash adds the 1% federal tax.
- First-transfer deals are left out, so you see the price you would pay every time.
- Check the final amount on the company’s own website before you pay. Rates change during the day.
